Director of Battery Storage

- Working model: Hybrid, with regular time in the Berlin office and travel to project sites and partners
The opportunity:
We are looking for a Director of Battery Storage to lead the growth of a utility-scale battery energy storage portfolio in Germany. This is a senior role for someone who can combine commercial judgment with a strong understanding of how BESS projects are developed, connected to the grid and delivered.
You will set the battery storage strategy, assess new opportunities and guide projects from early development through investment decisions and into construction. Working closely with development, grid, engineering, finance and commercial teams, you will help turn a growing pipeline into viable, investable projects.
What you'll do :
- Define and execute the company’s battery storage strategy in Germany.
- Build and manage a pipeline of standalone and co-located BESS projects.
- Assess project opportunities, including site suitability, grid access, permitting, technical design, commercial potential and key risks.
- Lead negotiations with landowners, development partners, technology providers and other external stakeholders.
- Work with finance and commercial teams on business cases, investment decisions and revenue strategies.
- Oversee project progress against development milestones, budgets and delivery plans.
- Build strong relationships with grid operators, authorities, investors and industry partners.
- Lead and develop a multidisciplinary team as the portfolio grows.
- Report on pipeline performance, project risks and strategic priorities to senior leadership.
What you bring:
- Significant experience in renewable energy or energy storage, with a track record of developing or delivering utility-scale projects in Germany.
- Strong knowledge of the German BESS market, particularly grid connection, permitting and project economics.
- Experience taking projects through key development and investment milestones.
- The ability to assess technical and commercial risks and make clear recommendations.
- Strong negotiation, stakeholder management and leadership skills.
- A hands-on approach and the confidence to work across strategy and project detail.
- Fluent German and English.
Experience with co-located PV and BESS projects, acquisitions or battery revenue models would be particularly valuable.
